On January 24, 2020, Old Dominion University hosted the kick-off meeting for the Coastal Virginia Center for Cyber Innovation, aka COVA CCI. COVA CCI is southeastern Virginia’s component of the larger Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI).
CCI is a state funded initiative led by Virginia Tech and based in Northern Virginia which is designed to be an engine for research, innovation and commercialization of cybersecurity technologies, and it will address the Commonwealth’s need for growth of the cyber workforce. CCI is a connected network across Virginia and it consists of four regional nodes; Northern, Central, Southwest and Coastal. Each node is led by a state research institution – George Mason (Northern), Virginia Commonwealth and University of Virginia (Central), Virginia Tech (Southwest) and Old Dominion (Coastal). The focus of CCI is to conduct leading edge research in cyberphyscial system security, 5G applications, AI assurance and autonomous systems across multiple industry sectors. It will also focus on creating cyber talent across the educational spectrum and in converting research into commercial enterprises.
COVA CCI will lead the region in research, innovation, and commercialization of next-generation cybersecurity technologies particularly in the areas of Cyber Physical Systems Security (CPSS), 5G, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in maritime, defense, and transportation industries. COVA CCI addresses the Commonwealth and regional needs for growth in qualified cybersecurity professionals and advanced professional degrees with the cyber workforce. This will be accomplished through partnerships with academia, industry, and government working in a collaborative environment.
During the kick-off meeting Dr. Brian Payne, Vice Provost, Old Dominion University and COVA CCI Executive Director, provided an overview of CCI and the strategic plan for COVA CCI. He was followed by presentations on the various committees that make up COVA CCI – Leadership Council, Academic Curricula, Research Collaboration, Experiential Learning, External Partnerships, and Institutional IT Security.
